Iceage, formed in Copenhagen in 2008 by teenage friends Elias Bender Rønnenfelt, Jakob Tvilling Pless, Johan Surrballe Wieth, and Dan Kjær Nielsen, began as a fierce post-punk and hardcore band channeling the raw energy of youth. Their debut, 'New Brigade,' established them as raucous, unrelenting, and brimming with brotherhood. Over the years, their sound evolved through albums like 'You're Nothing' and 'Plowing Into the Field of Love,' moving towards a more textured, world-weary vaudeville style. Their latest album 'Seek Shelter,' produced by Sonic Boom of Spacemen 3, was recorded under rainy, moody conditions in Lisbon, infusing the music with a profound warmth and ecstatic expansiveness. This record blends traditional song structures with gospel and blues influences, featuring haunting harmonica and a gospel choir, reflecting an emotional depth rare in punk descendants. Lead singer Elias has described the band’s songwriting as a mysterious, ever-changing process resisting formulaic patterns, echoing their journey from blinding youthful urgency to mature musical exploration.
